Ocean Safety's Liferaft Rental is Cost-Effective Solution

If you only go offshore a few times a year have you considered the option of renting a liferaft instead of buying one?

Leading provider of safety equipment Ocean Safety has seen a marked shift from liferaft sales to rental contracts in the past year. Single handed yachtsmen right through to large commercial vessels with 65 person liferafts are taking up the rental option.

Alistair Hackett, Managing Director at Ocean Safety points out “Hiring a liferaft means you don’t have to worry about storage and you don’t have the capital cost of buying your own liferaft. There’s also the consideration of regular servicing, whose costs are included in hire fees. There’s no need to worry about the service date expiring, or about a liferaft that is getting old.”

Offshore events like next month’s Rolex Fastnet Race are typical of long races where a liferaft is needed. Arranging a hire contract for a race like this - and for the series of qualifiers that have to be undertaken in order to take part - is simple with Ocean Safety.

With branches near both the start and finish lines in Southampton, Plymouth, Ocean Safety is perfectly positioned for collecting and returning the liferafts.

“We are particularly noticing how the liferaft hire market is growing,” says Hackett. “Racing yacht owners are also hiring from our lifejacket range too. Overall, Ocean Safety still sells significantly more liferafts than it hires out, but that gap is closing.”

In the leisure sector many more owners, both cruisers and racers, now carry liferafts than they did ten or more years ago which has increased the number of liferafts in circulation. “Leisure end user awareness has really increased, with a greater understanding of the importance of having a raft. Hiring is a very cost effective way of ensuring that crews comply with rules but also have peace of mind” says Hackett. “Yacht fleet operators are taking advantage of hire contracts too, most notably for the Clipper Race and Volvo Ocean Race fleets, which took advantage of the scheme during their last round the world races.”
