Choosing and Fitting a Personal AIS Beacon

OS Blog Template 4

Personal AIS Beacons have become a popular choice with many lifejacket users nowadays.

For most people the idea of having an automatically activating beacon transmit MOB location details is the main attraction.

There are some important considerations to make when considering your lifejacket/beacon combination.
More specifically it is important to realise that whilst the beacon manufacturer may issue a set of instructions to guide the owner through installation of the beacon themselves, these fitting methods may not work for all jackets. There is no “one method suits all” way to fit. This is particularly true of more recent jacket models and older style beacons.

We at Ocean Safety always advise that Personal AIS beacons (of whatever make) are fitted to Ocean Safety lifejackets by Ocean Safety approved service station technicians. Once fitted they should not be tampered with in any way.

This will give the optimum chance that the beacon will activate automatically on inflation of the jacket. IN A VERY small number of cases it may be that for some reason, the beacon may not fire automatically. It follows that everyone wearing a jacket containing a personal AIS beacon must be made aware of the correct way to operate the beacon MANUALLY to override failures.

Beacon manufacturer Kannad who manufacture the ground breaking R10 beacon have added to their website a list of Ocean Safety lifejackets that have been tested and received their approval for automatic fitting to their website.

For Ocean Safety jackets NOT on this list, the beacons should be installed for MANUAL operation only.
